The 2026 Hobie 16 International Championships got underway Monday at Ocean Springs Yacht Club with the first day of racing in the Masters, Grand Masters and Great Grand Masters divisions.
The four-day preliminary championship brings together experienced Hobie 16 sailors competing in three age-based divisions ahead of the Open Hobie 16 International Championships that will follow.
After an initial delay on shore, the breeze finally filled from the southwest at approximately five knots, allowing racing to get underway. Two races were completed during the afternoon as the wind gradually increased, ranging from five to ten knots.
The relatively light and shifting conditions provided a challenging start to the championship. Sailors had to pay close attention to changes in the breeze and make the most of every opportunity on the racecourse. The lighter conditions favored sailors who are particularly strong in light air, but the shifts and variable pressure also created opportunities for boats to gain or lose positions throughout the races.
With two races completed, the championship remains wide open as competitors look ahead to the remaining three days of preliminary-event racing. Racing in the Masters, Grand Masters and Great Grand Masters divisions continues through September 17.
