We Mourn the Passing of Two Members of our Community – Nicolas Liebel & Judy Domanski (Sajdak)

In Loving Memory

This was a sad week for the Hobie Class Association, with the passing of two dear members of our community.

Nicolas Liebel

In Loving Memory of Nicolas Liebel
February 10, 1963 – January 13, 2026

We say farewell to Nicolas Liebel — a loving husband and father, and a true sailor at heart.

For the Hobie 14 and Hobie 16 community, Nicolas was more than a fellow sailor. He was happiest on the water, chasing wind and waves, even in rough conditions (and despite always getting seasick). He loved sharing his passion, helping others get their Hobie back upright, and reminding us that sailing is about freedom, friendship, and joy.

Diagnosed with cancer 17 years ago, Nicolas chose to live fully, appreciate every moment, and spend his time doing what he loved — sailing, laughing, and being with those around him.

His humor, generosity, and unmistakable presence will remain with us, anchored forever in our hearts.

Fair winds and following seas, Nicolas.

A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.

Judy DomanskiJudy Domanski (Sajdak) was a beloved and longtime member of the Hobie Family, a true “Hobie Mom” whose presence was felt on the beach, on the water, and in the hearts of everyone she met.

Judy became part of the Hobie Family in the 1980’s and remained deeply involved for decades. Being part of the Hobie Family brought her immense joy, and she was always looking forward to the next regatta. When Judy was around, there was never a dull moment. Whether she was dancing to the Village People at the Ocean Springs Yacht Club with Fleet 204, or pushing her walker through the sand or gravel parking lots just to make it to the raffle, Judy was going to be there.

She became famously lucky at the raffles – a detail that became part of her legend and brought smiles and laughter to countless events. Not bad for someone who didn’t even own a boat.

Judy had a special affection for the Hobie events and, most of all, for the friends she made over the years. She will always be remembered for her warmth, her sense of fun, and her constant willingness to help.

Her legacy lives on in the countless regattas she supported, the sailors she touched, and the lifelong friendships she built.

To the members of the Hobie Family: My mom and I thank you for the joy, friendship, and sense of belonging you shared with her throughout her life. Her Hobie neckless was a symbol of how much the Hobie Family- and the friendships within it- meant to her. It was her happy place. The depth of that bond was especially meaningful to me when I learned she was wearing her Hobie necklace at the time of her passing.

Thank you, Hobie Family, for loving her as she loved you.

With gratitude and appreciation,
Jim Sajdak
